
Hiroki Shibasaki, Value Creation Unit, VCU, SOMPO Light Vortex
Dr. Hiroki Shibasaki earned his Ph.D. (Engineering) in 2016 and began his professional career at Sompo Japan Insurance Inc., where he specialized in automobile insurance product operations. In 2017, he joined Sompo Holdings Inc. as part of SOMPO Digital Lab, leading multiple Proof-of-Concept (PoC) initiatives focused on digital transformation in the automotive and insurance sectors. His work included advanced projects utilizing drive recorders and IoT technologies to enhance traffic safety and monitor senior driving behavior, achieved through cross-functional collaboration across the Group and with external stakeholders. Dr. Shibasaki also played a pivotal role in SOMPO’s global innovation strategy, establishing the company’s first overseas innovation hub in Israel—an industry-first initiative. There, he engaged in business development and strategic investment due diligence in partnership with local startups and venture capital firms. From 2021 to 2023, he studied at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, Shidler College of Business, as a company-sponsored scholar, earning an MBA and a Certificate in Entrepreneurship. Upon returning to SOMPO Digital Lab in 2023, he served as Chief of Staff (CoS) to Executive Vice President Koichi Narasaki, overseeing strategic planning and leading the launch of the Value Creation Unit (VCU) at SOMPO Light Vortex Inc., as well as business development initiatives at REVortex, Inc. Since August 2025, Dr. Shibasaki has continued as CoS in the Business Development Dept. at SOMPO Holdings, contributing to the Group’s growth through new business incubation, digital strategy, and ecosystem innovation. He is a recipient of the Sompo Japan President’s Award and so on. He also has held academic positions at Meiji University and at Waseda University.
